closing time

I wasn’t sure what category to give this post, considering the unique nature of what I am going to talk about.

I am a little bit of an architecture freak. I know nothing about formal names of architectural things, I just find the physical interaction of light, shadows and shapes to be unusually appealing, and I find architecture to be the best medium for the presentation of these natural phenomena. So on Saturday, I went to the opening of the new Concourse A at Sea-Tac Airport. It is the first terminal at Sea-Tac to feature moving walkways. I was impressed by its airiness, the best in the airport since the expansion and remodeling of Concourse C and B in the 90’s. It also has some of the most incredible public art displays. Usually when I have seen public art, it has either been stupid, ugly, or hard to understand. The new terminal incorporates video art and a moving weird thing (I can’t explain it, its like a Rube Goldberg thing…its just strange) as well as the requisite sculptures and paintings. At the end of the terminal there is stunning stained glass in the shape of…birds or something, I can’t recall, anyway, it covers the glass at the end of the terminal and its quite impressive. As part of the opening day celebrations, they also opened up the Delta important-people-lounge-place. I can’t remember what its called, five points, five star, whatever. Anyway, it is crazy. It makes me want to travel so I can be important enough to go and visit, if only to sit in the huge chairs and wave obnoxiously at the people trying to have meetings in the conference room (conference room? who on earth has a meeting in an airline club at an airport?). Needless to say, Concourse A and the new South Terminal are very impressive.

Oh, did I mention the stream and rock formations outside?

The whole reason I am even talking about architecture is because of the new Central Library downtown. Look at the pictures, words are not required.

Now that my architecture obsession has been satisfied for the day, I promise to blog about graduation soon. Ok, that’s not true, I don’t like making promises I may not keep. I tried doing it earlier, and the cats kept me from the computer…yeah, excuses, whatever.
